Europe’s Largest Green Hydrogen Plant Begins Operations in Spain

Spain has taken a major step toward industrial decarbonization with the inauguration of the largest green hydrogen production facility in Europe. Developed by Iberdrola in collaboration with H2 Green Steel, this facility boasts an annual production capacity of 100,000 tons and will play a crucial role in reducing carbon emissions in steel and chemical industries.

•Project Highlights:

•Location: Puertollano, Spain

•Energy Source: Powered by a 2 GW solar and wind farm

Electrolysis Technology: Advanced PEM electrolyzers enabling high efficiency

Target Industries: Steel production, chemical manufacturing, and heavy transportation

Spain’s Role in the EU’s Green Hydrogen Strategy:

Spain’s abundant solar and wind resources make it a hub for green hydrogen production.

The European Union aims to import green hydrogen from Spain to support Germany, France, and other industrial nations.

The project aligns with the EU Green Deal, which aims for 40 GW of renewable hydrogen electrolyzers by 2030.

Impact on Global Hydrogen Markets:

Hydrogen as a fuel: The facility is expected to supply hydrogen-powered heavy transport such as trucks and trains.

Steel sector decarbonization: Hydrogen will replace coal-based blast furnaces, significantly reducing CO? emissions.

Export potential: Spain could become a leading exporter of green hydrogen to Northern Europe and beyond.
