India Leads Other Nations in the Green Hydrogen Sector: Pralhad Joshi

06 Jan 2025

Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, recently stated that India is leading other nations in the area of green hydrogen. Speaking during his visit to the floating solar plant at Omkareshwar Dam in Khandwa district, Madhya Pradesh, he highlighted that the central government has issued a tender for the world’s largest green ammonia demonstration project.

Besides, the minister also mentioned that work on offshore wind power projects is progressing, with tenders now having been invited in Gujarat. "When we talk of offshore wind power, it means installing windmills in the sea, which necessitates development and enhancement of ports and transmission infrastructure. Along with this, efforts are also underway to advance geothermal power, although it is still in the early stage of development," Joshi said.

He added that a revolution is unfolding in the solar energy sector, with India emerging as a global leader in renewable energy. India is also leading other nations in the field of green hydrogen. Moreover, we have issued a tender for green ammonia, which represents the world's largest project of its kind.

The minister emphasised that the solar plant at Omkareshwar Dam is one of its kind and generates 278 MW of power. He mentioned, "This plant is supplying electricity to Delhi Metro. I'm considering how we can replicate this in other regions of the country with potential. There's a potential for 90 GW of power generation, but very little progress has been made so far."

The minister stated that officials, leaders from other states, and energy experts, particularly from regions with large dams, should visit this project to learn from it and replicate it elsewhere. This could help achieve the targets of 500 GW of non-fossil energy by 2030 and 1800 GW by 2047. While India requires electricity, it should be sourced from sustainable methods, Joshi stated.
