On Saturday, Union Minister for Power and Housing & Urban Affairs, Manohar Lal, launched a fleet of NTPC green hydrogen buses in Leh, accompanied by senior officials from the Ministry of Power, Leh Administration, and NTPC. Following the flag-off, the Union Minister travelled 12 km in the H2 bus, from the H2 Filling Station to Leh Airport.
The Union Minister praised NTPC for its unparalleled contribution to the nation's energy security and decarbonisation efforts, highlighting its adoption of hydrogen technologies across various areas such as mobility, blending with PNG, green methanol, and its overall focus on renewable energy.
The Green Hydrogen Mobility project in Leh includes a 1.7 MW in-situ solar power plant, a green hydrogen fueling station with a capacity of 80 kg/day, and five intra-city hydrogen-powered buses. Each bus can travel a distance of 300 km by filling 25 kg of hydrogen.
It is the world's highest-altitude green hydrogen mobility project, located at 3650 meters above sea level. It is specifically designed to function in low-density air and sub-zero temperatures, with the capability to refill hydrogen at a pressure of 350 bars.
The station is expected to reduce carbon emissions by approximately 350 MT/year and provide a net oxygen contribution of 230 MT/year, which is equivalent to planting around 13,000 trees.
