NTPC Plant Becomes the First in the World to Convert Captured CO2 into Methanol

12 Nov 2024

NTPC, the government-owned power giant, announced on the previous day that "in a significant breakthrough, it has successfully synthesised CO2 captured from flue gas with hydrogen generated from a PEM electrolyser, which was then converted into methanol at NTPC's Vindhyachal plant."

At the 50th Raising Day celebration of the power major, NTPC Chairman Gurdeep Singh highlighted that "the CO2 capture plant and the CO2-to-methanol plant, both world-firsts, represent a significant milestone in carbon management and sustainable fuel production."

He also mentioned that NTPC has been focusing on Gen-4 ethanol, green urea, and sustainable aviation fuel. The company has also developed and successfully tested the 'first indigenous catalyst' for methanol synthesis while making significant progress with hydrogen, carbon capture, and other cutting-edge technologies, underlining its commitment to build an environmentally sustainable future.

On this occasion, the CMD of NTPC virtually inaugurated the hydrogen-powered buses that will be operated in Leh. These hydrogen buses mark a crucial leap in NTPC's commitment to advancing clean and sustainable technologies.
