India’s renewable energy sector has made significant progress with the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) approving two large-scale Pumped Storage Projects (PSPs) in Maharashtra— the 1,500 MW Bhavali PSP by JSW Energy Ltd. and the 1,000 MW Bhivpuri PSP by Tata Power Co. Ltd. Supported by key organizations such as the Central Water Commission (CWC) and the Geological Survey of India (GSI), these projects received approval just 10 days after the developers submitted their final Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) through an online portal.
These PSPs are expected to be fast-tracked for completion by 2028, offering over 15 GWh of storage capacity. This will help meet peak energy demands during non-solar hours and improve grid stability by accelerating the integration of renewable energy.
The CEA plans to approve at least two PSPs per month in 2024, with a goal of clearing 15 hydro storage projects totaling 25,500 MW by 2025. To date, four PSPs with a combined capacity of 5,100 MW have already been approved. In addition, the CEA has introduced an online platform, "Jalvi-store," to simplify pre-DPR processes and speed up approvals.
These developments emphasize the increasing role of the private sector in advancing India’s renewable energy goals. The collaboration between public and private entities underscores the nation’s strong commitment to enhancing the reliability and sustainability of its power grid.
