Ahead of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz's visit to India, New Delhi and Berlin have agreed to strengthen collaboration in renewable energy, urban development, agroecology, and mobility sectors. These discussions were a focal point during development policy negotiations between India’s Department of Economic Affairs and Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, according to German officials.
Both nations have committed to deepening their cooperation in renewable energy, urban development, mobility, and agroecology over the coming years. This partnership is strategically guided by the "Partnership for Green and Sustainable Development," established in 2022 following discussions between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chancellor Scholz.
Chancellor Scholz is set to visit India next month for further discussions.
"Germany and India share a long-standing, strategic, and trusted partnership," said Barbara Schafer, head of the German delegation at the talks.
Schafer also highlighted the launch of the 'India-Germany Platform for Investments in Renewable Energy Worldwide,' an initiative introduced on September 16 during the RE-Invest event in Gandhinagar, Gujarat.
"Germany has consistently honored its international obligations, and with this year's commitments, we've demonstrated our dedication to achieving concrete results," Schafer noted. She added that the partnership has already yielded success, citing the construction of 7,700 kilometers of modern transmission lines and metro systems in Mumbai, Surat, and Ahmedabad, supported by German co-financing.
Germany is also aiding Indian farmers in adopting climate-resilient, sustainable agricultural practices and is involved in triangular projects in Peru and African countries to leverage combined expertise.
These recent developments set the stage for the upcoming Indo-German government consultations between Prime Minister Modi and Chancellor Scholz, scheduled for October.
Uwe Gehlen, Head of the German Development Cooperation in India and Minister Counsellor at the German Embassy, said, "The term 'sustainable energy transition' takes on new meaning when India and Germany unite their unique capabilities, setting a global example."
In 2024, Germany has allocated over €1 billion for projects in key sectors, including renewable energy, energy transmission, urban development, mobility, forest ecosystems, water management, sustainable agriculture, agroecology, vocational education, and cooperation with the National Mission for Clean Ganga, according to an official German statement.
