Gujarat is paving the way for a greener and more sustainable future, positioning itself as a frontrunner in renewable energy. With a strategic emphasis on solar power, the state is playing a pivotal role in helping India meet its ambitious goal of 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030. Gujarat’s large-scale solar initiatives are setting a benchmark for other regions across the country.
From solar installations on government buildings and residential rooftops to vast solar parks, Gujarat is leveraging its geographic advantages to maximize solar energy generation. Jai Prakash Shivahare, Managing Director of Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Ltd., stated, "Gujarat currently has over 28 GW of renewable energy capacity, of which approximately 14.5 GW is solar. We lead the country in residential rooftop solar, contributing over 50% to the national total. Our DISCOMs have created a highly supportive environment for promoting residential solar installations. Additionally, the state holds immense potential for further growth."
Shivahare further highlighted that under Gujarat's 2023 Renewable Energy Policy, the state aims to install 100 GW of renewable energy by 2030, significantly contributing to India's national target. With a capacity exceeding 600 MW, Charanka Solar Park, once barren land, has been instrumental in establishing Gujarat as a leader in solar energy production and has set a benchmark for successful public-private partnerships.
Dhruv Patel, an employee at Charanka Solar Park, added, "Charanka is Asia's leading solar plant, providing employment opportunities. The previously unused land is now generating power for local villages, cities, and is connected to both the state and national grids."
In addition to solar energy, Gujarat is focusing on hybrid renewable energy projects, integrating wind and solar to improve both reliability and efficiency. The state's 2023 Integrated Renewable Energy Policy offers a solid framework for investors, supported by land allotment policies, on-demand connectivity, and off-taker guarantees to encourage renewable energy development.
Shivahare also noted, "The Renewable Energy Policy covers offshore wind and emerging technologies. Off-taker guarantees from state utilities like GUVNL ensure project viability and ease of financing, making Gujarat a favorable destination for renewable energy investments."
During the 4th Global Renewable Energy Investors Meet and Expo in Gandhinagar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi recognized Gujarat's leadership in renewable energy. His recent visit to Gujarat included meetings with beneficiaries of the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, a government initiative that has encouraged widespread adoption of rooftop solar.
Gujarat’s leadership in the renewable energy sector provides a model for other states to follow. As India works toward its renewable energy goals, Gujarat’s progress highlights the vital role individual states can play in promoting sustainable development and a cleaner energy future.
