On the second day of the 4th Global Renewable Energy Investors Summit (RE-Invest) 2024 in Ahmedabad, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel launched the ‘100 GW Renewable Energy Mission in Gujarat’, which aims to install 100 GW of renewable energy (RE) in the state by 2030 and help India achieve its target of achieving 500 GW capacity. The overarching theme of RE-Invest is Mission 500 GW, which outlines India’s strategic goal to significantly expand its renewable energy capacity by 2030.
Emphasizing that Gujarat has attracted investment commitments totaling Rs 3.07 lakh crore in the renewable energy sector, Patel noted that the state is a leader in the nation for wind and solar power generation. He mentioned that Gujarat boasts an installed power capacity exceeding 50,000 MW, with 54% derived from renewable energy sources.
Gujarat CM also launched the ‘Gujarat Energy Vision 2047’ initiative during the event
Gujarat's energy and green hydrogen initiatives serve as prime examples of progressive policy-making. Additionally, the state government is actively fostering emerging sectors such as semi-conductors and fintech. Notably, Gujarat stands out as the only state in India set to host four semiconductor plants, a development that holds great promise for the future of the energy sector.
As of April 2024, Gujarat boasted a total installed renewable energy capacity of 27.8 GW, which includes approximately 11.7 GW of wind power—making it the highest in India—alongside 13.8 GW of solar power, 1,990 MW of large hydro, and modest contributions from biomass (112.5 MW) and small hydropower (91.64 MW), according to the report.
As the fourth largest country in the world for installed renewable energy capacity, India is committed to enhancing its role as a leader in the global energy transition. At the launch ceremony, Pralhad Joshi, Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy, stated, “Under the PM Solar Home Free Electricity Scheme, 3,50,000 customers nationwide have installed rooftop solar systems, with half of these installations already completed. Gujarat has effectively utilized the Rs 4,490 crore designated for clean energy initiatives.”
He also noted that a total investment of ?32.45 lakh crore has been pledged for renewable energy projects by 2030. Manufacturers are set to boost their production capacities, committing to an additional 340 GW for solar modules, 240 GW for solar cells, 22 GW for wind turbines, and 10 GW for electrolysers, he added.
