Jindal Steel and Jindal Renewables to Collaborate for Green Hydrogen Generation

16 Sep 2024

Jindal Steel (JSPL) and Jindal Renewables (JRPL) have unveiled a groundbreaking Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to spearhead India's largest green hydrogen investment by an Indian steelmaker to date. This partnership highlights a significant pledge from both companies to advance decarbonization efforts and lead the charge in green energy within India's steel sector.

The MoU outlines JSPL's strategy to incorporate green hydrogen into its Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) units in Angul, Odisha, marking a major advancement towards low-emission steel production. In the initial phase, Jindal Renewables will establish a green hydrogen production capacity of up to 4,500 tons annually, with operations slated to begin by December 2025.

Additionally, the project includes supplying 36,000 tons of oxygen per year for use at the Angul steelworks. Jindal Renewables will also provide 3 GW of renewable energy to JSPL's operations, aiming to cut the steelmaker's reliance on coal-fired energy by 50% within the next 2–3 years. This shift to green energy is expected to significantly reduce the company's carbon footprint.

JSPL will supply the crucial infrastructure and support, while JRPL will take charge of developing and operating the green hydrogen and renewable energy facilities. This partnership highlights a significant dedication to decarbonization and leading the green energy transition within India’s steel sector. Through cutting-edge engineering, the MOU is designed to not only drastically reduce green hydrogen production costs but also establish a sustainable business model with secured off-take agreements for the next 25 years.
