On Saturday, Union Minister Jitendra Singh said that bio-manufacturing is set to transform the global economy, with India being uniquely positioned to spearhead this shift thanks to its rich bio-resources.
"India stands poised to spearhead the next major revolution, driven by advancements in bio-manufacturing. Just as the West pioneered the IT revolution, India, with its vast and largely untapped bio-resources, is now ready to take the lead," Singh remarked.
He explained that bio-manufacturing presents solutions to pressing global issues such as climate change, resource depletion, waste management, and pollution. It has the potential to address the increasing demand for food and energy while also generating new employment opportunities.
Singh noted that India relies heavily on importing crude oil at present. However, advancements in bio-manufacturing, which use biomass and carbon dioxide, have the potential to enhance the country's self-sufficiency in fuel production. Additionally, this technology could benefit the dairy industry by providing non-dairy milk alternatives, thus fostering greater resource sustainability.
Last week, the Union Cabinet gave the green light to the ‘BioE3 (Biotechnology for Economy, Environment, and Employment) Policy’, aimed at promoting advanced bio-manufacturing.’
This policy aims to enhance research, drive technological innovation, and accelerate commercialisation by establishing bio-manufacturing and bio-AI hubs, as well as bio-foundries. These initiatives will facilitate the production of a range of products, from pharmaceuticals to materials, and support the integration of cutting-edge biotechnological methods in agriculture and manufacturing.
