151 GW of projects are currently underway, and 76.42 GW will be put into service in three to four years: Joshi

Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Prahlad Joshi said that currently about 151 GW renewable energy projects are being implemented, out of which 76.42 GW projects will be commissioned in the next 3-4 years.

Speaking at the Mercom India Renewables Summit 2024, Joshi emphasised the government's focus on promoting renewable energy, which is reflected in various initiatives and Budget 2024 announcements.

Joshi highlighted key initiatives including prioritising energy storage, providing free electricity to 10 million households under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar: Free Electricity Scheme, and developing a policy for pumped hydro storage to enhance renewable energy integration.

Renewable energy capacity in the country is set to grow 2.5-fold from 76 GW in 2014 to over 195 GW by June 2024. Solar power capacity has grown from 3 GW in 2014 to over 85 GW, while wind power capacity has grown from 21 GW to over 46 GW in this decade.
