INDIA WILL ACHIEVE ITS RENEWABLE ENERGY TARGET BY 2022: HARSH VARDHAN

17 Sep 2019

Union Minister Harsh Vardhan on Monday said India is on track to achieve its renewable energy target by 2022, as set by the Narendra Modi government. "We are making good progress. In fact, we are leading from the front," the Minister for Science and Technology said at an event in Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru. "You know our Prime Minister (Narendra Modi) has said that by 2022, we want to have at least 175 GW of renewable energy production in the country, out of which 100 GW would be through solar and rest through other sources", he added. India has set a target of reducing greenhouse emissions by 33-35 percent to combat climate change and global warming. So far, the country has been able to reduce it to 21 percent, Harsh Vardhan said.
Speaking about the 'Ayushman Bharat', Harsh Vardhan said more than 50 lakh people have availed of benefits under the health insurance scheme over the past one year, and the government has spent Rs 7,500 crore for it. The government is trying to build "good quality synergy" in terms of research work at various laboratories which, Harsh Vardhan said, was lacking earlier.
“This synergy would help achieve the prime minister's vision of making the country among top scientific nations by 2030", Harsh Vardhan said, adding the country is ranked third globally in the field of nanotechnology.
